During a painting session, keep brushes immersed in water to prevent paint drying on the bristles. A shallow tray like this one will also prevent distortion of the bristles.

After use, brushes should be rinsed thoroughly in clean water. To remove paint from the neck of the brush, where the hairs enter the metal ferrule, stroke the brush gently across a bar of soap. Then lather the bristles in the palm of your hand with a gentle circular motion until the last trace of color comes out in the lather. Rinse again, then shake out the water and reshape the bristles with your fingers. Leave the brushes to dry upright in a jar.

If brushes do become caked with paint, soak them overnight in methylated spirit. This should loosen the paint sufficiently for it to be worked out under running water. Then wash the brushes in mild soap and warm water.

To prevent paints from drying out on the palette, spray them periodically with a mist of water. Special stay-wet palettes are available that keep paints moist for days (see page 177). Use plastic palettes for ease of cleaning and wash them immediately after use. If paint becomes caked on the palette, leave it to soak in warm water for an hour and then peel or scrape it off.

At the end of the painting session, it is worth making the effort to wipe the tube caps and the screw heads with a damp cloth; otherwise the dried paint will make it difficult to remove the caps next time you paint. (If tube caps are stuck, they can usually be loosened by pouring hot water over them.)

Once dry, acrylic paint is almost impossible to remove from any absorbent surface, so take the precaution of wearing old clothes and shoes when working, and protect surrounding surfaces with sheets of newspaper.
